Doing Math in Spanish

Basic Arithmetic in Spanish
It's super easy to do basic arithmetic in Spanish. All you have to do is know the proper way to word your sentence. If you want to add, subtract, multiply, or divide, there is a special way to say it. Let's start with adding.
It's really not that hard really. Just use the word más to indicate the "plus" like in the English language. Use the plural form of ser to indicate the "equals" sign. Here... look at this equation:
Tres más tres son seis. Three more (plus) three son (is/are) six. 3+3=6. It's just that simple really. You can use this in any case when you are discussing a math problem or situation in which you need to add two numbers together.
2 + 10 = 12
dos más diez son doce
.........................................................
8 + 6 = 14
ocho más seis son catorce
Now onward to subtracting. It's the same method as adding except we must use menos instead of más. Remember that "menos" means "less" in Spanish. So think of each equation featuring menos to be "number less number is..." Here, let's look at this equation.
Dos menos uno es uno. Two less (minus) one is one. 2-2=1. Get it? Let's use another example.
Cuatro menos dos son dos. Four less (minus) two is two. 4-2=2. Remember to use "son" when the solution is plural and "es" when the solution is just one or zero.
9 - 1 = 8
nueve menos uno son ocho
.........................................................
28 - 6 = 22
veintiocho menos seis son veintidós
Multiplying uses the word por which can mean "by" or "on" in Spanish among other things. Use this word to specify the product of two numbers.
Dos por dos son cuatro. Two by (times) two is four. 2x2=4.
2 x 8 = 16
dos por ocho son dieciséis
........................................................
20 x 3 = 60
veinte por tres son sesenta
For dividing two numbers use the phrase Dividido Por or Dividido Entre. The same sentence phrasing exists here. Just write it like all the other sentences.
Doce dividido entre tres son cuatro. 12÷3=4.
70 ÷ 10 = 7
setenta dividido por diez son siete
.........................................................
10 ÷ 5 = 2
diez dividido por cinco son dos
Dos menos uno es uno. Two less (minus) one is one. 2-2=1. Get it? Let's use another example.
Cuatro menos dos son dos. Four less (minus) two is two. 4-2=2. Remember to use "son" when the solution is plural and "es" when the solution is just one or zero.
